Autonomic-type symptoms

The familiar label VSD groups different symptoms but does not explain their cause. Cardiac, blood-pressure, metabolic and neurological factors may need assessment.

Understanding the concern

What to know before booking

Palpitations, dizziness, sweating, weakness, breathlessness and blood-pressure fluctuation occur in many conditions, from dehydration and anaemia to arrhythmia, endocrine disease, medication effects or anxiety.

The consultation begins with episode history, blood pressure and pulse, medication review and appropriate referrals. Symptoms should not automatically be labelled psychosomatic, and manual treatment cannot promise to normalise the autonomic system.

After dangerous causes are excluded and a primary plan is established, support may address breathing habits, muscle tension, sleep and gradual return to activity. Progress is judged by specific symptom frequency and severity.

  2. 02

Decision on ECG, laboratory testing, cardiology, neurology or endocrinology.

  3. 03

Review of breathing habits, sleep, hydration and activity tolerance.

  4. 04

A monitoring plan without independent medication changes.

Patient questions

Key questions

Is VSD a diagnosis?+

This label does not explain the cause and should not stop assessment. Clinical records should use a specific established diagnosis or described syndrome.

Can cardiology be skipped?+

Palpitations, fainting, chest pain or abnormal pulse or pressure may require cardiology. Osteopathic assessment cannot replace it.

Can breathing exercises help?+

They may sometimes reduce hyperventilation and tension, but only after acute cardiac and respiratory causes have been excluded.
