Headaches

A headache is a symptom rather than a single diagnosis. Its type and potentially dangerous causes must be considered before discussing adjunctive approaches.

Understanding the concern

What to know before booking

Headache may accompany migraine, tension-type headache, sleep disturbance, infection, blood-pressure changes, eye or neck conditions and many other problems. Location alone is not a reliable self-diagnostic tool.

The consultation reviews frequency, duration, triggers, aura, nausea, medication response and neurological symptoms. Neck and shoulder tension may be assessed, but is not assumed to explain every headache.

For a diagnosed primary headache and where appropriate, gentle work with functional restrictions may complement a neurologist’s plan. A headache diary helps assess attack frequency and response objectively.

Reasons to consult

Common concerns

This list helps orientation but does not establish a diagnosis or confirm an indication for osteopathic care.

  • recurrent attacks with nausea, light sensitivity or sound sensitivity
  • pressing pain after visual strain, stress or prolonged work
  • pain accompanied by neck tension and restricted movement
  • a change in the usual frequency or character of headache
  • need for painkillers more often than usual

Initial consultation

How assessment works

Assessment and next steps depend on history, existing investigations and the condition on the day.

  1. 01

Detailed history of attacks and medicines, including analgesic frequency.

  2. 02

Blood-pressure measurement and basic neurological assessment.

  3. 03

Decision on whether neurology, ophthalmology, ENT assessment or further investigations are needed.

  4. 04

Discussion of sleep, workload, regular meals and a headache diary.

Team approach

Practitioners who may help

Roles are kept distinct: medical diagnosis and treatment are not replaced by wellbeing or consultation practices.

Urgent care

Do not wait for a routine visit

Seek urgent medical care or call emergency services for:

  • !a sudden, maximal-intensity headache
  • !speech, vision or balance disturbance, limb weakness or confusion
  • !headache after head injury, with high fever, stiff neck or repeated vomiting

Patient questions

Key questions

Can migraine be treated with osteopathy alone?+

No. Migraine requires a correct diagnosis and a plan that may include acute and preventive treatment. Osteopathic consultation is considered only as a possible adjunct.

How should I prepare?+

Record frequency, duration, associated symptoms and medication use over recent weeks, and bring previous investigation results.

When is a neurologist needed?+

For new, increasing or changed headaches, neurological symptoms or failure of usual treatment. Red flags require urgent rather than routine care.
